Mold remediation with an ozone generator.

For some reason, this has become very popular recently, possibly because the producers of ozone generators have begun to market their products as mold killers. The marketing departments of these companies have begun to claim that their product can actually produce “pure air,” or oxygen that can actually kill off colonies of mold. Not only is this claim completely false, it has cost those concerned about mold on their properties thousands of dollars. Ozone has been marketed as a better kind of oxygen, and though it is derived from oxygen, it is actually toxic and can be extremely harmful to humans and animals.

Regulatory agencies have made special statements, discussing the dangerous of this kind of generator, stating clearly that humans and animals should not be exposed to ozone. Ozone can actually cause heart palpations, coughing, difficulty breathing, and irritate the throat and lungs. The level of acceptable ozone in an environment is infinitesimal—using one of these ozone generators far exceeds this acceptable level.

Some companies have put out false claims that one of their generators can actually help to control the growth of mold colonies. The EPA, on the other hand, has revealed that an ozone generator promotes pollution, can absolutely ruin the quality of indoor air, and does little, if anything to kill bacteria, viruses, other pollutants, and especially mold. It cannot even get rid of chemicals that cause significant odors. This, combined with the fact that ozone can actually be very dangerous for humans to breathe in, makes an ozone generator a very bad choice for anyone looking to remediate mold.

Some ozone generators will market themselves as EPA approved, even including an EPA numbers on the packaging. This is extremely misleading, as many different products are EPA tested and have EPA numbers, however this does not mean in any way that they are EPA approved. It simply signifies that the EPA has studied the product, but does not mean that they have marked it as safe or operative. If you want more information about what the EPA does and what their stance on ozone generators is, got to the EPA website.
